Our CEO Sue van der Linde has made it to the finals of the Santam, Fairlady national competition to find the Women of the Future. Sue is one of three finalists in the social entrepreneur category. Sue is also the only finalist in the Western Cape. National Child Protection Week 2020

National Child Protection Week is commemorated in the country annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and Children’s Act (Act No. 38 of 2005).

South Africa has drafted legislation, based on the United Convention of the Rights of the Child, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and the Constitution.

The campaign began in 1997 and it aims to mobilise all sectors of society to ensure that children and cared for and protected. While the initiative is led by the Minister of Social Development, it is every citizen’s duty to a role in protecting children and creating a safe and secure environment for them.

Children in South Africa live in a society with a Constitution that has the highest regard for their rights and for the equality and dignity of everyone. Protecting children from violence, exploitation and abuse is not only a basic value but also an obligation clearly set out in Article 28 of the South African Constitution.

IRIS HOUSE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE IS A REGISTERED CHILD PROTECTION AGENCY

During the child protection week, we will be distributing care parcels and cloth masks to over 30 special needs children in safety and foster care. As well as conducting health checks conducted by our Hospice Nurse. We have been tasked with training 60 safety/foster parents by April 2021 to be able to care for special needs children in need of placements. It is our aim to ensure that these marginalised, vulnerable children have the opportunity to be cared for by loving, caring parents and not subjected to abuse and neglect in their own homes.

We all know that caring for a special needs child can be challenging under everyday circumstances, a lockdown is not something any of us have experienced before. Please find below the measures we at Iris House are taking regarding infection control of the Coronavirus and the effect on our DSD outcomes, our families, staff, fundraising team and board members.

1. Community Care:

Information Considered

Iris House Children’s hospice carers provide respite care in the homes of our children. Carers visit more than one family in the line of their duties. Carers make use of public transport to get to and from respite care sessions in the community. Carers are equipped with hand gel and are all trained on best practise hygiene. Over 80 % of our carers have children in school’s which will be closed as from Wednesday. Over 70% of the children in our care are already compromised in regards to their health. We have no control over the level of hygiene at parents homes. Some of our parents work, we have no control over infection control measure at their places of work. Some of the families in the North and South do undertake international travel. Iris House is only short 4 community care session for the month of March and has matched or bettered all other targets for the year regarding community care.

Decision Made

Effective immediately Iris House Childrens Hospice will cease all community based care and delivery of food and nappies into our communities. We will inform all families of this decision during the course of the day and assist with any Corona related needs they may have by way of signposting to the designated hospital and advice via the telephone. We will provide telephone support to families as well as regular updates on WhatsApp, giving advice on hand washing techniques written by Nurse Michaels. The interruption of services will at this stage be in effect from today till the 31st of March. Staff/ Carers are requested to self quarantine from today of March till the 31st of March

2. Hospice Based Care:

Information Considered

Iris House Children’s Hospice is well equipped with infection control measures. All staff at the hospice are trained in infection control. All areas, toys and equipment at the hospice are throughly cleaned before and after each session. The Iris House 7 seater vehicle is equipped for infection control. The Iris House 7 seater vehicle is carrying vulnerable children and staff members to and from hospice session. Some children in the Northern Suburbs are brought in by their parents. Iris House has invested in additional infection control by way of masks and additional gloves and hand sanitiser. Iris House carers and staff make use of taxis to arrive at work. Many of our syndrome and cerebral children often present with fever and cold like symptoms due to their conditions. It would be impossible to differentiate these symptoms from Coronavirus symptoms without blood test and or swabbing. Over 70% of the children in our care are already compromised in regards to their health. Iris House has to rely on the parent of the child to disclose any illness which is not immediately evident on collection or arrival at the hospice. Schools will be closed from Wednesday. Some of our parents work, we have no control over infection control measure at their places of work. Some of the families in the North and South do undertake international travel. Iris House has overachieved its DSD target for March and overachieved its annual target

Decision Made

Effective 17th of March we will cease hospice sessions. Permeant staff will undertake through cleansing of the hospice today. Visitors will not be permitted on the hospice grounds from today. Families will be supported to the best of our ability as noted in point one above. Woolworths collection of food items will cease from today (Monday the 16th of March). Staff are requested to self quarantine from Tuesday the 17th of March till the 31st of March. Carers and leads must submit or necessary documentation to admin staff in order to facilitate timeous delivery of DSD reporting. Please note financial information may not be available from our accountants if they decide to close their offices, I am awaiting their decision on this and will inform the DSD members included in this email as soon as I have confirmation from the accounting officers. No fundraising or social events will take place at the hospice as from today. March Fundraising and Board meetings will not take place in March. All meetings will recommence on previously agreed dates in April. Skeleton ground staff will ensure our animals are cared for during the shutdown period. The interruption of services will at this stage be in effect from tomorrow till the 31st of March.

3. Assessment, therapeutic and developmental services

Information Considered

Iris House Children’s hospice provides assessments, therapeutic and development. Services are delivered on an individual basis and in groups at either the hospice or community venues such as libraries . Social Workers and staff are in contact with more than one family in the line of their duties. Carers, families and some staff make use of public transport to get to and from assessment, therapeutic and development sessions in the community and at the hospice. Social workers and staff are equipped with hand gel and are all trained on best practise hygiene. One of our two social workers has children in school’s which will be closed as from Wednesday. We have no control over the level of hygiene used by parents or outside venues. Some of our parents who attend our groups sessions work, we have no control over infection control measure at their places of work. Some of the families in the North and South do undertake international travel. Iris House has overachieved it DSD target for this output for the month of March and the year.

Decision Made

5. Doggy Day Care Protective Workshop

Information Considered

Currently our doggy day care has 18 dogs attending the day care. Dogs are delivered by their owners. The owners are working, we have no control over infection control at their workplace. We have no control over the owners exposure to the virus. No dogs have been documented to carry the virus. The doggy day care manager has a child in school, the schools are closing on the 18th of March. The additional staff member at the day care will move onto the premises on the 17th of March. The young adult at the workshop is not physically compromised, he is in good health. The young adult at the workshop does not have his own transport, he is currently relying on his Father or the day care manager for transport. The staff have been trained on infection control and have the necessary items for hand washing and infection control. Contact with the owners is limited to drop off and collection, there is no need for close contact with the owners. The staff member at doggy day care uses public transport if he comes from home to work. The manager has her own transport. The day care has running water and electricity. The day care has a portable chemical toilet and no bathroom. The day care has suitable buildings for living in but not kitchen or bathroom. The day care is well within walking distance of our hospice. The hospice has a cottage on the grounds which is fully equipped with a bathroom. The hospice kitchen has all cooking equipment needed. The managers husband will be working from home on some days between now and April. It is possible for the managers daughter to join her at the day care. The manager works part time from 6.30am till 12.30pm.

Decision Made

The Doggy day care, protective workshop will remain open at this time. The permanent staff member will move onto the property. The staff member will be given access to Iris House cottage and kitchen for cooking and bathing facilities. The manager will work as normal at the day care. Our nurse will ensure all day care staff and our workshop member are fully aware of hand-washing procedures and infection control today by giving training to each person today. Daily communication between the staff members and the CEO will take place via whatsapp or phone. The staff are to ensure that they limit contact with dog owners when dogs are delivered or fetched. The continuation of service will be assessed daily by the CEO on receiving feedback from the staff. Additional disposable gloves and wipes will be allocated to the day care. All staff are to report for duty, leave must be taken if time off is needed. The young workshop adult can consult with is family re attendance. His decision to attend the workshop or not will be respected by Iris House.

Doggy Day Care – First Dog Show

Doggy Day Care Workshop – First Dog Show

We recently held our first Fun Dog Show at our new Iris House Project our Doggy Day Care. The Day Care operates like any other, with professional staff ensuring dogs of all ages and sizes have a fun day with the pack while their humans are at work. No more coming home to big holes in the garden or coach, only tired but happy dogs.

The dogs are entrusted to professionals who are directly responsible for their care, however for Iris House it was also seen as an opportunity to give our over 18’s a new lease on life. To have a reason to get out of bed in the morning. To earn a stipend, To socialize, and to learn how to work with the dogs from the pro’s and hopefully even join the mainstream workforce at some stage. The workshop is the first of its kind in the Western Cape, and judging by the humble beginnings to where it is now, it is set to grow rapidly. We aim to eventually have an onsite grooming parlor and food production section as well.

The dog show was well supported, our Patron Mrs. Tracy Winde also attended with her gorgeous dog. Cape Metro K9 unit gave a fantastic display of how their highly trained dogs can sniff out drugs and explosives as well as take on the baddies and bring them to book.

Prizes were awarded for many categories including dog who looks most like owner and dog with the best personality . Prizes were sponsored by Checkers and Platterkloof Vet Shop.

There are plans to extend the day care to double its size and allow more fur babies to join in 2020. Sue van der Linde. Founder and CEO of Iris House Children’s Hospice hopes to have 15 young adults working at the Day Care once all three projects are in full swing. The CEO of Maersk SA has already expressed his interest in providing containers which can be customized for the grooming parlor and the food production. Work starts in 2020 to extend the current day care camps and add some fun doggy activities.

Iris House first Wine Tasting Art Auction in conjunction with Groot Constantia – 25 July 2019

Iris House Children’s Hospice now cares for over 500 special needs children and their families. Offering them FREE respite care and holistic support for the whole family. Respite care and therapies are delivered at our Hospice in Stikland and in 46 communities throughout the Western Cape. This essential service is often the only support a family of a Special Needs Child will receive. At our hospice we also offer physiotherapy, equine therapy and have a registered Nurse who also works in the community. Over and above we donate much needed food via our Checkers Vegetable Garden and Woolworths waste food sponsors.

Our social workers run support groups in 5 areas and our care team and leads are always on hand to visit families in need of assistance. We also assist families by training parents on how to cope with their Childs needs and also to care for themselves. We employee six Mom’s of Special Needs Children as carers and two as care team leaders in the community.

Throughout the year events are held at the hospice, bringing parents together to assist with them setting up their own support structures and also to decrease the feeling of loneliness and isolation so many of our parents, in particular our single Mom’s experience.

This year, Iris House has joined forces with the iconic brand and National landmark winery Groot Constantia to raise funds to support the FREE services we offer. We will be hosting a wine tasting /art auction on the 25th of July from 7pm. Tickets are R480 per person and include a welcome MCC with Oysters from Oyster Kings, a buffet meal, 10% off all wines, a wonderful selection of Groot Constantia Art pieces, jewellery and two magnums signed by the wine maker. Rare Diamond Award – Project Category Winners

Local charity nabs national award

Based in Stikland, and serving communities across the Western Cape, Iris House Children’s Hospice has scooped the Rare Diamond Project Award. A national award that honours individuals that have led and implemented innovative projects that aimed to deliver better health care solutions, showing strong results in improving the life of rare disease patients.

The prestigious award ceremony was held in Johannesburg this past weekend, and was attended by Iris House CEO and Founder Sue van der Linde. Sue, who has dedicated her life to ensure that special needs children and families receive the care and support they deserve, accepted the award. She highlighted the plight of special needs children and families across South Africa, and the need for more quality respite care and support services for these children and families. Iris House now serves over 435 children across the Western Cape, but there are still so much more that need support.

The Iris House team and family remain ecstatic and humbled the win, as the recognition validates the important work they carry out on a daily basis. It is the hope of Sue and her team that the award sheds light on the unique challenges faced by those in the special needs community, and the responsibility that we all have to create and inclusive and supportive society.

The Rare Diamond Awards recognizes excellence in advancement of overall healthcare, treatment and support offered by all those working within the Rare Diseases space in South Africa as well as individuals that have made a positive impact on the rare disease community. No such national awards exist within the healthcare sector, with entries welcomed from a wide range of patients, caregivers, industry partners and fellow healthcare professionals.

Iris House – de Vere Acuma Purple Ball

An evening marked by elegance and heart, the Iris House Devere Acuma Purple Ball proved to be the most extraordinary show of generosity the charity has experienced. It was the tangible sense of magnanimity that filled the ballroom, together with the superb quality items that saw the auction alone raising over R500 000. The magnanimity only grew as impassioned Founder, Sue van der Linde presented three projects of significant importance to the wellbeing of families served and growth of the charity. Guests were invited to sponsor these projects which include the re-tarring of the Hospice driveway which will provide beneficiaries safe access to hospice facilities, installation of air-conditioning throughout the Hospice which will assist with body temperature regulation and allergy control, and a Legacy Project that see the building of a Occupational Therapy and Aqua Therapy room at the Hospice.

Inspired by her vision, the display of interest in supporting these projects together with the funds raised through a successful auction will ensure that Iris House achieves it’s goal of raising enough funds to meet the growing demand for it’s essential services across the Western Cape.

Iris House Children’s Hospice has it’s very own Celeb Chef

Iris House Projects Manager Ashley-William Van Heerden is well known at the Hospice for his amazing showcase of story telling with “Imagination Station”, a project that helps to ensure all of our children have the opportunity to explore literacy at a level they can understand. Additionally, his focus on expanding the borders of literacy and develop also takes the form ofsensory cooking sessions which the children love.

Ashley is also right hand to Founder and CEO Sue van der Linde. Leading and assisting with many corporate and international fundraising applications and supporting Sue to ensure that Iris House grows from strength to strength, and raising awareness and support special needs children in the Western Cape. Ashley in his first three months at Iris House secured the first Lotto funding allowing Iris House to purchase a much needed bakkie for collection and delivery of donations. Ashley is a firm favorite with the special needs children Iris House supports and can often be found in the playroom rather than his office. In fact there’s not much Ashley can’t do when he puts his mind to it. Ashley served as a youth advisor for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and is also a trained Disney story teller.

Ashley entered the competition with his cousin Chris as his team mate. Homely and hearty Cape Malay-inspired dishes, infused with global flavours, is how the cousins describe their food style. For them, food brings people together, while sharing meals represents love, comfort and unbreakable familial bonds.

We are so proud of Ashley and support him 100% . We wish him and Chris well on the show. We are very appreciative that that he somehow managed to balance the demanding filming schedule with his duties at the hospice and has never let a deadline slip. We are hoping that Ashley will have the opportunity to publish a book based on sensory cooking with special needs children, but where ever this journey takes him, we know that Ashely always puts others needs before his own. It’s just who he is.

Iris House Children’s Hospice forced to cancel their planned Parent Support event

Iris House Children’s Hospice forced to cancel their planned Parent Support event

Parent Appreciation Day, which was due to take place on the 24th of June. The event is an opportunity for families of special needs children who are life-limited and/or life-threatened, to get together in a non-judgmental environment and form lasting friendships. As not all the families have transport of their own, the cost of transporting them to the hospice is over R10 000, and providing them with lunch and entertainment is costly. Over 200 parents were scheduled to attend this annual event, which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to lack of funds. Iris House’s regular sponsors, who do SO much for them, were unable to assist them on this occasion. Sue van der Linde, CEO and Founder of the charity, says “it was a very tough decision to make” as they are well aware of how much the parents look forward to these events, which provide them with badly-needed moral and emotional support.

Moving forward, Sue with her fundraising team and the backing of her board members will be ramping up their fund-raising efforts and in particular focusing on re-occurring monthly donations. She says “The reality is, we have outgrown the amount of funding we receive from the Dept of Social Development, whose much-needed contribution covers only 30% of our costs, and we need to become even more self-sufficient. We will not start charging for our services, which are all free to our families, as this would mean those with higher income would get the lion’s share of our services and those living below the bread line would not be able to afford care at all. This is not a level playing field, and is not how Iris House works.”

Although in tough times many NPO’s charge or limit their services, Iris House follows the trend of the needs of their families and adapts and grows in line with this. Sue comes from a retail buying and marketing background and is well versed in changing, expanding and varying stock to meet changing customer needs. The concept remains true with their services. Running Iris House is a dynamic process, where the charity has to grow, change, adapt, and expand according to the different needs of each child and their family.

Having a reliable monthly income flow would dramatically strengthen their cash flow position and allow them to budget more effectively.

The holistic services offered by the hospice to the 425 children they serve include:

*respite care in the community

*respite care at the hospice

*services of their social workers, physio-therapist, qualified nurse, art and music therapy, equine therapy, support groups for parents and siblings, bereavement counselling

* A literacy program – with their Imagination Station story telling

*hospital support

*diagnosis support

*parental training and empowerment

*assistance with food, nappies, and where necessary, medical equipment

*assistance with the care and removal of children who are being abused and/or neglected.

An important issue which has been directly affected by the current lack of funding is their Safety House Parent training program. Abuse and neglect is, sadly, rife within the realms of special needs. Currently, there is almost nowhere for these children, who are at risk, to be placed, and Iris House has embarked on a project with AGAPE (an existing safety parent network) to train and empower their registered safety parents to take in special needs children. Given the current government funding cut backs, this essential service is under threat. Iris House is determined to find a way to complete the training of the 87 safety parents who have expressed interest in taking in special needs children who are at risk.

Often, the respite care or support services Iris House offer is the only lifeline available to the families of special needs children. Iris House feels very strongly about its obligation to continue to support these amazing children and their parents. They are reaching out to you, the public, to support their work.
